Leeds Museums & Galleries Service is in the midst of a period of major investment and development. A new Visitor Centre opened at Kirkstall Abbey in 2006. 2007 saw the opening of the newly refurbished Art Gallery and the £6 million Museum Discovery Centre. A further £23 million has been invested in the new Leeds City Museum which is due open in September 2008.

This is a unique opportunity to be part of reshaping one of the country’s major Museum and Gallery services, working with major collections and historic sites to build a challenging, dynamic and sustainable customer focussed service that meets the educational, cultural, social inclusion and urban renewal goals of Leeds City Council.

Curator Fine Art

£26,067- £27,594 Ref: 8930

Based in the newly refurbished Leeds Art Gallery you will be responsible for shaping the future of our outstanding designated Fine Art collections. You will be interested in collections development, research, exhibitions and events and education in Fine Art to appeal to all sections of the community and visitors to the city.

Leeds Museums & Galleries Service are looking for an individual with a passion for their collections - especially 20th Century painting and print-making, a proven academic track record, an inspirational communicator with demonstrable experience of Fine Art collections management and interpretation. A post-graduate qualification, experience of working with a collection of similar status and of planning and delivering exhibitions and events with a wide variety of audiences is essential.

22.5 hours per week

Based in: Leeds, UK

Axis is looking for a curator with exceptional writing, communication and project management skills to join a small, energetic and committed team and create content for the 'Selected' section of the Axis website. You will have an excellent knowledge of contemporary art and the national visual arts infrastructure and a high level of IT literacy. You will be responsible for coordinating Open Frequency, curated selections and play a crucial role in the development of Axis' online resource. Over the last two years Leeds City Council has opened the newly refurbished Leeds Art Gallery, a £6m Museum Discovery centre last year and is due to open its new £23m Leeds City Museum in Autumn ’08. A curator is sought to be a part of the reshaping of one of the country’s major museum and art gallery services that puts collections and people at the heart of its education, cultural and social inclusion goals.

Based in the newly refurbished Leeds Art Gallery you will be responsible for the development, care, access and interpretation of the designated Fine Art collections including “probably the best collection of 20th century British Art outside London” (The Times). You will also play a key role in the development of exhibitions, events and educational activities in the area of Fine Art to appeal to all sections of the community and visitors to the City. Experience of working in collections management in a similar environment and of planning and delivering exhibitions and events with a wide variety of audiences is essential. This is a full-time position, salary £26,067 - 27,594 p.a.
