Carleton University Art Gallery (CUAG) in Ottawa, Ontario, is seeking
an innovative, imaginative and experienced individual for the position
of Curator, a key member of a small but dynamic and highly productive
team. The Curator works with CUAG’s director to formulate and carry
out an imaginative and original program of exhibitions (8-12 annually)
comprised of solo and group exhibitions of historic and contemporary
art, with accompanying publications. The Curator coordinates all
exhibitions at CUAG, coordinates the publication of exhibition
catalogues, and plans and carries out the gallery’s public
programming. The Curator works closely with the Director on all
applications to external granting agencies. The Curator supervises the
gallery’s practicum students and research assistants and oversees
their professional development. The Curator is the registrar of the
University’s art collection, and assists the Director in processing
acquisitions of art. The Curator is the gallery’s publicist, promoting
CUAG’s programs and enhancing its public profile.

Qualifications for the Curator’s position include a Master’s Degree or
equivalent in Art History, Museum Studies, Curatorial Studies or a
related field, and three to five years of progressively responsible
curatorial experience in a university or public art gallery or as an
independent curator, with a demonstrated record of curatorial
research, writing, and programming. Experience creating and managing a
multi-year exhibition program would be beneficial. The Curator must
possess extensive knowledge of historic and contemporary art,
particularly Canadian but also international, and a thorough
understanding of the practices, ethics and standards of gallery
practice in Canada.
