National Museums Scotland is one of the UK’s leading museum services. It has a national and international reach and operates four museum sites.

A major redevelopment and modernisation programme across our organisation is nearing completion, including a £50 million redevelopment of the National Museum of Scotland. This investment has created new displays, enhanced learning and public facilities and provides high quality visitor experiences. A further £12 million of investment in new displays is being planned for this site.

This is an exciting opportunity to curate an expanding collection within the recently formed department of Art and Design at National Museums Scotland. As head of section, you will have overall responsibility for the post-1850 collections of European decorative art and design. You will lead, manage and participate in research and public programmes and you will perform a key role in the creation of the new Art and Design galleries scheduled to open in 2016. In addition, you will be expected to contribute to the temporary exhibition calendar and to National Museums Scotland’s contemporary art strategy. Candidates will have a demonstrable area of expertise in a design related field and should be fluent in the dialogue between craft, art, design and technology.

You will have a degree/postgraduate qualification (or equivalent) in a relevant subject, plus proven relevant work experience. An excellent communicator with proven research and publication skills, you will be organised, methodical, adept at problem solving, a team worker and a good thinker. You will have experience in managing staff and projects, and will have good ICT skills.
