The Art Gallery of Alberta is a centre of excellence for the visual arts in Western Canada, connecting people, art and ideas. The AGA is focused on the development and presentation of original exhibitions of contemporary and historical art from Alberta, Canada and around the world. The AGA also offers a full-range of art education and public programs. Founded in 1924, the Art Gallery of Alberta maintains a collection of over 6,000 objects and is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the only museum in the province solely dedicated to the exhibition and preservation of art and visual culture

The Curator will work under the direction of the Executive Director / Chief Curator on the development and delivery of AGA exhibitions and related public programs. This responsibility will include the development of innovative and diverse exhibitions that focus on Albertan and Canadian contemporary and historical art. The Curator will also contribute to the management and development of the AGA permanent collection through involvement with acquisitions, documentation, research as well as the development of collections-based exhibitions. In addition, the Curator will oversee the project management of select incoming and outgoing touring exhibitions and publications and will oversee the development of interpretive programs to animate AGA exhibitions and collections.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a graduate degree in Art History, Cultural Studies or Curatorial / Museum Studies and 5-10 years related work experience in a museum or public art gallery context. Candidates should have a broad understanding of Canadian contemporary art, contemporary issues relevant to the visual arts as well as a knowledge of Canadian historical art and its context within the larger discipline of art history. Candidates will have a documented history of producing engaging and well-researched exhibitions, experience working with art collections and a history of writing and editing original texts for publication, including exhibition catalogues, brochures, interpretive and related promotional materials. As well, candidates will have direct experience in project and budget management, excellent organizational and management skills, strong communication abilities with demonstrated experience speaking to the public and media, and the ability to work under direction and in a team environment.
