The Foundation for a Civil Society: YVAA – Vilcek Curatorial Fellowship Open Call
Deadline: 30 April, 2013

The Foundation for a Civil Society is pleased to announce the Young Visual Artists Awards: Marica Vilcek Fellowship.

Fellowships will be awarded to two US-based curators, critics and art historians with demonstrated experience and excellence in engaging with international contemporary art. The fellowship is composed of two main features: First, fellows will be provided with an opportunity to travel to one or more of the YVAA countries in Central and South-East Europe to serve as guest jury members for the national awards, as well as conduct short-term independent research, curatorial projects and develop professional networks. Second, fellows will serve as guest critics for the 10 YVAA artists in residence at International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) from September 2013 to May 2014, should they reside in NY. Fellows may be asked to write and publish features on the resident artists for the YVAA blog and other outlets. Furthermore, fellows may be invited to a six-week curatorial residency at ISCP between December 2013 and January 2014. The fellowship will cover economy air travel to and ground transportation within the YVAA countries (up to $1700), accommodation and per diems (up to $600), and honoraria ($500). A panel of professionals who live in, or have extensive knowledge of the region, will select the successful applicant. The YVAA juries convene in June and October and short-listed candidates will be contacted by YVAA Program Director for an informal conversation to establish eligibility and availability.

The Young Visual Artists Awards is an international network of awards and a New York residency program in Central and South East Europe. First established with President Havel and a group of artists in Czechoslovakia in 1990, this highly successful program has grown to 10 countries and has to date awarded and presented in the US 111 artists.

The YVAA awards and their local organizers are: ARDHJE AWARD – TICA , Tirana, Albania; ZVONO AWARD – Sarajevo Center for Contemporary Arts, Bosnia and Herzegovina; BAZA AWARD – Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia, Bulgaria; RADOSLAV PUTAR AWARD – Institute for Contemporary Art, SCCA, Zagreb, Croatia; JINDRICH CHALUPECKY AWARD – Jindrich Chalupecky Society, Prague, Czech Republic; ARTIST OF TOMORROW AWARD – Kosova Art Gallery, Prishtina, Kosovo; DENES AWARD – Contemporary Art Center, Skopje, Macedonia; DIMITRIJE BASICEVIC MANGELOS AWARD – Remont Gallery, Belgrade, Serbia; OSKAR CEPAN AWARD – Foundation/Center for Contemporary Arts, Bratislava, Slovakia; OHO AWARD – P74 Center and Gallery, Ljubljana Slovenia.

Opportunity: apexart Franchise

Posted by Michelle Kasprzak • Wednesday, March 13. 2013 • Category: Jobs & Opportunities

The Franchise is an open call for group show proposals to be presented anywhere in the world except New York City. It is one of apexart's two curatorial open calls soliciting submissions for exhibitions that examine a specific idea or theme. Exhibitions can be about any topic that the curator/organizer finds compelling. Past shows have explored highway construction in Mexico City, climate in Los Angeles, manufacturing in Bangkok, Thailand, immigration in Stockholm, Sweden, and video DJs in Kampala, Uganda. Proposals do not have to be for the city where the curator is based, do not need to take place in traditional gallery settings, and venues for the show and artist lists do not need to be confirmed in advance of submitting an idea.

Applications will be accepted online only from April 4 - May 3, 2013.

Opportunity: Fellowships 2013–2015: Vera List Center for Art and Politics, NYC

Posted by • Monday, March 11. 2013 • Category: Jobs & Opportunities

Call for Applications
Deadline: April 8, 2013

The Vera List Center for Art and Politics is pleased to invite applications for the 2013–2015 Vera List Center Fellowships. Two fellowships will be awarded, each spanning eight months and linked to the Vera List Center's curatorial focus theme for 2013–2015, Alignment.

The Vera List Center Fellowships honor individuals whose work advances the discourse on art and politics. The fellowships provide the opportunity to further develop such work drawing from the resources of The New School, to expand on it in collaboration with students and classes, and to bring it to the public through the Vera List Center's interdisciplinary public programs.

The center's initiatives evolve around curatorial topics of particular urgency and broad resonance. In 2013–2015, the topic will be Alignment, usually referred to as the “proper or desirable relation of components.” With distinctions blurring between nature and culture, individual and group, and political and economic spheres, we will explore how alignments take place, and why. Art will provide the transdisciplinary lens for such an examination of alignments or correspondences. Over the course of four semesters, Alignment will be dissected and thematic program clusters will be formed around topics such as ecology; boycott, refusal and withdrawal; and ad hoc communities. The Vera List Center Fellows contribute to the intellectual foundation of the center, and through their fellowship projects advance the understanding of the focus theme.

The fellowship is part-time, non-residential, and carries a 10,000 USD stipend. Fellows are supported with a research assistant, they have access to a wide range of activities throughout The New School, and enjoy extended library privileges. Meetings and informal gatherings with New School faculty and other constituencies are organized throughout the year.

Eligibility
Journalists, historians, visual and performing artists, critics, curators, and cultural practitioners working in any field where they engage art and politics. The New School is an equal opportunity, affirmative action institution and encourages applications from minority candidates as well as from individuals without institutional affiliation.

Considerations
Artistic and/or scholarly excellence of fellowship proposal project.
Significance of project to the candidate's long-term practice.
Does the proposal relate to the focus theme in explicit and creative ways?
Does the fellowship project reflect or benefit from the association with The New School?

Timeline
April 8, 2013 – Initial application due, followed by reviews by members of the VLC staff, the VLC Advisory Committee, past Fellows and New School faculty.
Mid-April to early May – Finalists are invited to expand on their proposals.
Late May – Announcement of fellowship appointments.
Fellowship terms: ten months at any point between fall of 2013 and spring of 2015.
