Assistant or Associate Curator | Architecture and Design

Develops the collection, plans and executes both temporary exhibitions and collection-based rotations, and organizes related programs with a special emphasis on contemporary architecture (since 1990). Writes, edits, and assists in the production of Museum publications. Organizes the department’s affiliate group, contributing programming ideas with the aim to grow membership. Performs exhibition support functions and manages dispersal of exhibitions. Advises on the maintenance of the collection and loans related to contemporary architecture, and expedites arrangements for custodial, registration, conservation, and preparation work as required for rotations and exhibitions. Functions as a liaison with outside persons and organizations, and with other departments within the Museum. Reports to Chief Curator. Determination of final title id dependent on credentials of candidate.

Requirements: Strong background in the history of modern and contemporary architecture (and if possible Design) required. Bachelor’s degree, preferably in art history, architecture, or urban studies and a minimum of five years experience curating in a museum or gallery setting or of comparable engagement with contemporary architecture in a related venue or field is required. Advanced degree preferred. Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages, including a major European language preferred. Supervisory experience and demonstrated project management skills required. Must have the ability both to initiate independent projects and work collaboratively. Additional requirements include strong writing and interpersonal skills, effective presentation skills, and the ability to interact with and act on behalf of the department to Trustee Committee members, donors, and internal museum staff. Must possess an international perspective in the broadest sense, with as much awareness and curiosity about developments in Latin America, Asia, the Islamic World, and Africa as in North America and Europe. Must have an international awareness of the current architectural scene, including important emerging talent, and be an active figure in the architectural scene. Awareness of significant current and planned projects, of directions in major schools of architecture, and of trends in materials and themes of practice are essential. Must be equipped to participate in architectural symposia, congresses, and meetings representing the Department and the museum. Must be able to work independently, but also to organize and direct the work of others on individual projects, including curatorial assistants.
